2009 was filled with excellent teams. Here are the nominees for the best of 2009 as another great year in sports has brought us another memorable year.

New York Yankees After having the best record in all of baseball and winning their 27th World Title and 40th American League Pennant some critics say money bought the World Series this year when general manager Brian Cashmen went out and signed CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Tiexeira. They still have to go out and finish the job and the Yankees did that beating the defending Champion Philadelphia Phillies, who also could be on this list of great teams this year. The Yanks are again on top of the world and the Evil Empire has risen having not only a brand new stadium that has begun its legacy much like the original Yankee Stadium but also defying the critics being hated for their large wallets, super star egos and the fact they have gone 9 years without a title which is life a lifetime for the Steinbrenner family.

Pittsburgh Penguins The team that took the title away from Hockeytown, as in the Detroit Red Wings, needs to be included on this list of great teams of 2009. Even though the NHL may not be viewed as one of the most popular sports of years past. Still despite all odds playing in one of the most difficult arenas of all of sports in Joe Louis Arena the Pittsburgh Penguins finished off a season victoriously winning game 7 in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals where a year prior they lost to the same Detroit Red Wings. Led by young superstar Sidney Crosby the Pens where not one of the most favorites to win and came into the playoffs as a #4 seed but despite all the doubters saying they were too young and inexperienced to the veteran Red Wings they still found a way to win. Perhaps the best NHL Final in recent years the Penguins won and which once was known for Mario Lemieux has a new face for the future, Sid the Kid.

Pittsburgh Steelers They might not be one of the most prettiest teams on this list of great team of 2009 however the Pittsburgh Steelers adding their franchises leading 6th title has got to be added to these teams. The Steelers had one one of the best defensive teams ever in the NFL led by Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison, who without a last touchdown drive by Ben Roethlisberger, could have been MVP of the Super Bowl returning a 100 yard interception and really making the play of the year.
