Veteran's Day is a special day set aside for everyone to honor America's veterans for the many sacrifices they make for the American people. Thousands of men and women have given up their own civilian freedoms so that they can protect ours. November 11th is a day that Americans can come together to show appreciation for the many pleasures that these soldiers forfeit day in and day out.
Without it crossing our minds, we rise out of bed each morning and there is a soldier somewhere giving up their comforts so that we can freely go about our day. While we are having our morning coffee, a soldier somewhere is training for combat. It is our duty as American citizens to let these men and women know how much their sacrifices are appreciated. They should never feel that the work they do is ever taken for granted by those who are blessed to live in a free country.
The members of the Armed Forces did not enlist in the military for the pay or for a life of luxury. Many of these individuals give up their freedoms to become a soldier. They are told when they can eat, how to dress, and even how to fold the sheets on their cot. These are simple freedoms that many of us take for granted. Veteran's Day is a way for everyone to tell the veterans thank you for giving up their freedoms so we don't have to give up ours.
There are many ways that we can honor these truly brave men and women. It doesn't cost any money and only takes a moment of your time. Attending local Veteran's Day celebrations, flying your flag, or simply sending an email to a veteran you know are all small tokens that we can contribute to let the veterans know how much they are appreciated. If you work with a veteran, offer him your hand and say "thank you for everything you've done for this country", one could never know how much simple words means to a veteran.
Veteran's Day is not about showing support or non-support for current diplomatic and foreign policies. It is about the men and women who put their lives in harm's way because of their patriotism and love of their country. One only need to stop and consider what the world would be like if it weren't for these courageous veterans then the true understanding of honoring them on Veteran's Day would not have to be questioned.
