Christmas arts and crafts: How to make kitchen ornaments

There are many wonderful Christmas arts and crafts that can be done to make kitchen ornaments. If you are not trying to display great pieces of art, have your young children make these ornaments, which will add festive spirit and provide an entertaining afternoon spent with your children. These ornaments can be kept in the kitchen, or they can be used almost anywhere, even hanging on the tree.

The first ornament is a cookie cutter ornament. You will need the following supplies;

*bowls
*measuring cup
*water
*sugar
*teaspoon
*glue
*glitter (red and green)
*blue shoelace
*cookie cutters of Christmas shapes

Procedure

Begin by pouring 125mL of sugar into a bowl, and add 1 teaspoon (5ml) of the red and green glitter. Mix together well. Add another teaspoon of water, and mix until the sugar is evenly mixed and moist.

Gently press the sugar into the cookie cutters, and then upend the ornament gently onto a plate. There should be enough sugar to make several ornaments, depending on the size of the cookie cutters.To make more, simply double or triple the recipe. Let them dry overnight or until they are hard. This craft is ideal for toddlers or preschoolers since it allows for breaks.

Once completely dry, cut a hole in the cookies, and then glue a loop of shoelace to the back of each one and use as a hanger (in the kitchen, these can go over the door handle of the refrigerator, or over door knobs of cupboards. These festive ornaments will keep the Christmas spirit alive in the kitchen.

A Rice Wreath can be made to hang in the kitchen, or as a centerpiece on the kitchen table. It can also be used to go around the bottom of a decorative candle holder or hurricane glass filled with Christmas bells.

The supplies needed for this Rice Wreath are;

*white rice
*white glue
*green food colouring
*small bowl
*mixing wooden spoon
*measuring cup
*scissors
*red construction paper
*red shoelace
*bobby-pin
*snips/hole punch

Procedure

Drop six drops of green food colouring into 1/2 cup of glue, and mix until the glue is evenly coloured. Pour 1 cup of rice into the bowl , add the green glue mixture, and mix until the rice is completely coated in the festive green glue mixture.

Dollup the rice mixture onto the lid of the bowl and shape it into a circle, like a wreath. Push a bobby-pin into the edge of the wreath to serve as a hanger (if you choose to hang the wreath), and let the wreath dry overnight.

Use the snips or hole punch to punch out red construction paper which will serve as cranberries, and glue them onto the wreath. Tie a shoelace bow, and glue it to the top of the wreath.

This wreath can be used in a variety of manners, and since it is made from typical kitchen fare, it is well placed within the confines of the kitchen.

These Christmas arts and crafts are simple, which is why they are intended for children to make. This will help your children to get in the spirit of Christmas, rather than just thinking about what consumer products to ask Santa Claus to bring them Christmas morning.
