Thanksgiving arts and crafts projects for toddlers
Thanksgiving craft projects do not have to be toddler specific, as many crafts can be slightly modified to accomodate the toddlers and their abilities. When choosing arts and crafts projects, it is important to remember to choose something that the toddler may enjoy making, and where a lesson in the spirit of Thanksgiving can be given.
Toddlers are filled with curiosity about their environment, and are very kinesthetic in their learning styles. These toddlers need to be doing things in a hands-on approach, helping them to learn. The fine motor and gross motor activities also help with their development. As Thanksgiving approaches, it is easy to have your toddlers creating some arts and crafts that are thematic. If they enjoy doing these, it can serve as a nice segue into doing some arts and crafts projects for Christmas. Keeping your toddlers busy also helps out the parents.
A great toddler craft for Thanksgiving is to make a miniature turkey. This is an easy craft to make, and it gives the toddler a chance to use a tactile approach to making something that can be saved for years to come that will act as a reminder of how young they once were. In order to make the soft sculpture turkey, there are some supplies that you must have on hand. An old fabric or knit glove, or a gardening glove of some sort, some feathers (purchased at a local arts and crafts supplier, or found during a nature walk in a local conservation area or bird sanctuary), a pair of googly eyes, pieces of red and orange felt, preschool scissors (with the extra set of finger holes so that a parent can help to do hand over hand), glue, and cotton balls. The gathering of these supplies can also be a part of the process, which will have your toddler feel as though they are truly in charge of the project.
The first step to making the soft sculpture turkey is to take the glove, and stuff it full of cotton balls so that it is plump.. Have your toddler cram as many cotton balls as possible into the glove, so that the fingers are all full, and the glove is sturdy. Take the edges of the glove, and turn them inside, gluing them together. Clamp these edges together with clothespins until the glue has dried. They can also be stapled shut, or fastened in some other way, such as using brad nails.
Now poke lots of feathers into the glove in and around the fingers of the glove. Space them out as much as possible, or if you have lots of feathers, add as many
