Hyper-vocalizing in cats can be unique, fun at times, but it most cases in can become down right irritating. If your cat howls all the time, especially at night, by the time that you finally admit that the cat needs help, you may need just as much help as it can very unnerving in some cases. It is widely held that this is a condition in cats that is a behavior issue.
But in reality, it may or may not be the case. In some severe cases, it may be behavioral issues, but in the vast majority of cases it is usually something else and can be treated and corrected.
Cats can make a wide variety of sounds that can be very common to all cats or they can make sounds that are unique to their breed as well as their personality. The sounds can in form of the very welcome soft and comforting purr and low meow, or it can come as growl or a hiss. In other cases, the sounds are very much like a shriek, while in other instances you swear that your cat just spit at you.
Hyper vocalizing in cats will also depend on the breed of your cat. What is considered hyper in some cats may just be common communication to other cats. There is little doubt that Orientals breeds, especially Siamese, are by far and away the loudest, but the Tonkinese, Burmese and Korat breeds may not be far behind.
The more quiet breeds tend to be the Birman, Bombay, Havana Brown, Russian Blue, Scottish Fold, and the Selkirk Rex. While the breed of your cat may certainly determine how vocal they are and what type of personality they may have that may be contributing to any type of hyper-vocalizing, perhaps the most important of all factors is why they are so vocal.
If your cat has a personality where they love to roam and explore or be around people as much as possible, and you live in a very small apartment, it may be the to your cat as if they are locked in a closet and they will vocalize their discontent. The condition may also be used as a way to get your attention. However, it may also be the result of an underlying medical condition and they are simply trying to convey to you that something is wrong with them.
Interpreting and understanding this vocalization may be the key to slowing it down or ending it in some cases.
Possible Causes or Factors:
