Biography: Anne Frank

The Second World War ended on August 4th, 1944. Otto Frank returned to his home hoping that at least one person in his family had survived the Holocaust. His hope was in vain as he looked around a house that had been ransacked and destroyed by people that he would never personally know. As Otto Frank sat there in despair, Miep Gies placed a diary and some papers in his hands. It was the diary of his youngest daughter Anne Frank.

Annelies Marie Anne Frank came into the world on June 12th, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was the youngest daughter of Otto and Edith Frank. Anne was full of life, outspoken, full of energy and extremely extroverted. She loved to write but never shared any of her thoughts with anyone. Her only other sibling was Margot who was three years older than Anne. Margot was different than Anne, being very well mannered and somewhat reserved. Anne's short life would be one of happiness, sadness and eventually burdens that no child should ever have to endure with death the final reward. Her father would see the storm clouds forming but would be unable to help anyone in his family.

On March 13th, 1933 Adolf Hitler came into power completing the Nazi Party. At the time Anne did not realize the impact that the Nazi Party would have on her and her family's lives. Otto knew the potential for harm and moved Anne and the rest of his family to Aachen where they lived with Edith's mother for a time. Otto received a job offer in Amsterdam, Holland and moved his family there. They became four of the 300,000 Jews that were trying to escape Hitler's steadily growing regime.

Both girls were enrolled in school and, while Margot excelled in Math, Anne excelled in reading and writing. However this was not to be and was proven when Germany invaded the Netherlands in May of 1940. Otto had started a company called Pectacon which sold herbs, pickling spices and salts.

Persecution of Jews would soon follow in the form of discriminatory laws, mandatory registration and segregation of Jewish people. Soon Margot and Anne were prevented from attending the school they were in and were forced to attend a Jewish school called Lyceum.

The Anne that we know started on June 12th, 1942 when Anne's father gave her a diary for her birthday. The book was bound with red and green plaid cloth and had a precious small lock on its front. Anne began the life that we know that same day by writing in it that night. The beginning of her diary shows nothing of the horror that was yet to
