How poor management can lead to small business failure

Small business failure can be attributed to many things, but poor management is one of the primary reasons a business can fail.

There are many facets to managing a small business and this includes (but not limited to) finances, marketing, operations, and day to day details. A lack of focused management in any of these areas could contribute to a business not being able to attain success and become profitable.

*Financial Management

Poor management in this area is a huge problem. When a person intends to make a go of a start-up, there are a lot of financial considerations to be made. Personal assets, available capital and liquid capital, need for loans and understanding operational costs are all going to factor in how money is managed.

Understanding the financial needs of the business is essential. Without enough capital needed to invest and get the business up and running, if loans are depended upon, there must be a means to pay back the loans while the business is in its infantile stages. Few businesses prosper right from the beginning and having a contingency plan of how to stay operational while the business is running in the red is a serious consideration.

In addition, owners of small businesses must have a good grasp on how to manage money. There are many expenses associated with running a business and this must be considered as sales are made. Not every sale is a profit because other financial obligations must be paid.

A solid financial plan must be set in place. Once this managerial area is addressed and planned, a small business has a better chance of succeeding.

*Marketing Management

All businesses require a degree of marketing and small businesses are no exception. Understanding the industry market is another important area small businesses must address. Without proper managerial management in this area, a company is not going to have much opportunity to shine in a competitive environment.

Small business owners must understand how to choose their market segments, the right advertising venues and how to differentiate themselves from any perceived competition. Without marketing a small business is going to have a hard time reaching out to its desired consumer base. Without paying customers, a business is eventually going to flounder.

*Operations Management

A good business owner will intimately know the daily operations in and out. Every detail, no matter how small, contributes to the overall success of the business. This includes such as employee management, security, ordering and invoicing, sales, and basically any other business processes; any area the business needs to address in order to run.

Poor management in operational areas can eventually lead to business fail if issues are avoided or not addressed.

*Day to Day Details

Most small business owners must be heavily involved in the day to day details of the business. While some may have the luxury of hiring someone to take care of the details, most small business owners find they need to do this themselves. If small details are overlooked, this could result in employee or customer dissatisfaction, payments not being made, items being restocked or other daily transactions that must take place.

Running a small business definitely has it's challenges, but with good strong management, these can be overcome. While there is always a level of uncertainty when opening up any business, if the poor management issues are addressed from the beginning, the business has a much higher chance of finding profitability and success.
