The best colors for winter 2010

by Isabelle Esteves

Winter 2010 is upon us and if you haven't already thought about the new additions to your wardrobe you will be soon. Winter is a time when we traditionally think of dark somber colors that go along with the cold dark weather. This year as never before you will be seeing color in the winter lines of many designers.

Gray is the new neutral. You can build your new wardrobe around this basic. Think slate gray, charcoal gray and even the lightest of grays. You can build from this color. Use the gray for a new woolen or tweed skirt, a pair of gray dress slacks, a flannel gray blazer or even a pair of new gray jeans.

Olive green is another neutral that has made a comeback. There were years in the 70's when olive green was hot and it is again. It is also a color that is flattering to most women without being harsh. You can use the same basic theory to build your new fall wardrobe. Get a new coat or jacket in olive green. Think rich materials like suede or even leather. For the holiday season velvet or velour in olive green will also be a wardrobe builder.

If you have a good black winter coat, add a new hat and scarf in one of the neutrals. But don't stop there add a new gray cashmere sweater to your wardrobe or an olive green cardigan.

Now that you have the basics covered it is time to add some real color to your wardrobe. Winter 2010 is the season of the jewel tones. Think amethysts, rubies and sapphires. With these jewels as your basics you can find the companion pieces to take your wardrobe to the next level. With flannel being one of the hot fabrics for winter 2010 you should be on the lookout for the ideal flannel shirt in a men's style or in a more feminine incarnation. It isn't all about Buffalo plaid anymore but with the right colors Buffalo plaid makes a great fashion statement in 2010.

Pastels used to be confined to the spring and summer months but not anymore. With gray as a neutral, the soft tones of pink, light blues and aquas are back with a vengeance. Winter doesn't have to be drab, it can be fab.

Color is what winter 2010 is all about. Why not choose a few to help bring your wardrobe up to date. Get those new gray slacks and then add a couple jewel tops and a pastel sweater or vice versa. You can make small accessory changes that will bring lots of color into your wardrobe. Pack away your black bag and bring on the Turquoise. Get a pair of gray or olive boots to change things up. Winter 2010 is going to be a great time to express yourself. Color, it's a good thing.
