Magic: The Gathering card analysis: Day of Judgement

"Day of Judgment" is a white sorcery spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Zendikar." In a sense, the sorcery spell seems to be somewhat on par with the white sorcery spell known as "Wrath of God." However, one would probably see Day of Judgment only played during the standard format. In the standard format, Day of Judgment will probably see plenty of play in a white deck because of its ability.

The converted mana cost for Day of Judgment is four. You will need two white mana and two colorless mana to play Day of Judgment. For what Day of Judgment can do, the converted mana cost is reasonable enough. Keep in mind that Day of Judgment is a sorcery spell. In this respect, Day of Judgment can only be played during your turn. However, one could expect that Day of Judgment will not get much play outside of the standard format. This is due to several reasons.

What does Day of Judgment do in the first place?

When you play Day of Judgment, you destroy all creatures from the battlefield. This is pretty much a good way to clear the board of all creatures. In this respect, it helps you out should you be overwhelmed by your opponents. With the current standard format, there are no spells that can clear the board of creatures with the exception of "Planar Cleansing" in the "Magic 2010" core set. Then again, a person may choose to use Planar Cleansing instead of Day of Judgment in the current standard format.

In the current standard format, spells that can clear the battlefield virtually all creatures, with the exception of thoses that are indestructible, are pretty handy for the most part. However, it is highly unlikely that Day of Judgment would get much play outside of the standard format. I had even heard complaints that Wrath of God should have just simply be reprinted instead of having Day of Judgment reprinted.

When you look at both Wrath of God and Day of Judgment, you see that they both clear the entire battlefield of creatures. Both cards cost two white mana and two colorless mana. However, Wrath of God has an additional effect not present in Day of Judgment. Creatures destroyed by Wrath of God cannot be regenerated. That effect is not present in Day of Judgment. This is one major reason that Day of Judgment may not see much play outside of the standard format.

In an extended format, one may opt to use "Rout" instead of Day of Judgment. Rout is pretty much the same as Wrath of God. Rout costs two white and three colorless mana to cast. However, you can pay two more colorless mana to play Rout as an Instant spell. It has the same effects as Wrath of God.

In the standard format, one could opt to use "Planar Cleansing." While it is somewhat a bit more expensive than Day of Judgment, Planar Cleansing destroys all nonland permanents. Why settle just for creatures? Why not also go after the enchantments, artifacts, and planeswalkers too?

Overall, Day of Judgment is a good card to have in the current standard deck. With all these powerful creatures on the battlefield, Day of Judgment is a good means to get rid of them. However, one could go back to using stuff like Wrath of God and "Damnation" in an extended format.
