Magic the Gathering card analysis: Feast of Blood

"Feast of Blood" is a black sorcery spell printed as an uncommon for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Zendikar." This is a rather interesting sorcery for black printed in the Zendikar expansion set. However, the context of this sorcery encourages players to build around the theme or "tribe" of vampires. If you are not using vampires, you probably will not get anything out of Feast of Blood. With vampires and the right type of cards, you can get use out of Feast of Blood.

The converted mana cost for Feast of Blood is two. You will need one black mana and one colorless mana to play Feast of Blood. For what Feast of Blood can do, paying two mana is not bad of a deal. Keep in mind that Feast of Blood is a sorcery spell and can only be played during your turn. Also, there is a catch to playing Feast of Blood. You need to have at least two vampires under your control. If not, you cannot use Feast of Blood. That is pretty much the ruling of the card's ability. Because of this, you are forced to build a vampire deck.

What does Feast of Blood do in the first place?

Feast of Blood allows you to destroy a target creature. Keep in mind that the creature should neither have Shroud nor Protection from Black. Creatures with those abilities are protected from black spells such as Feast of Blood. Since is says "destroy a target creature," all creatures without Shroud or Protection from Black are fair game. In this respect, you can destroy black creatures and artifact creatures.

Most black spells and abilities do not give the opportunity to destroy black creatures and artifact creatures. Being able to use a black spell to destroy a black creature and/or an artifact creature makes Feast of Blood a great sorcery spell to have in a black creature destruction deck.

However, that is not the only effect that Feast of Blood offers. In the process, you get to gain four points of life. Being able to gain life points is a good thing.

Being able to use Feast of Blood in a draft format is easier said than done. With your sealed booster packs, you have no idea what cards are going to be inside. Plus, you may be tempted to straight up take the rare and mythic rare cards just for the sake of their rarity. Plus, you have to be adaptable when it comes to the limited draft format. In a limited format, you cannot simply say you are going to build a vampire themed deck.

In the standard format, you can combine this with the "Magic 2010" black enchantment called "Sanguine Bond." Sanguine Bond lets you make a target player lose life points equal to the life points you gain. If you gained four life points via Feast of Blood, you can make an opponent lose four life points via Sanguine Bond.

In an extended format, you can combine Feast of Blood with Sanguine Bond and "Wound Reflection." Wound Reflection doubles the amount of life an opponent loses. You gain four points of life and your opponent loses eight points of life in the end. In a black and white deck, you can add in "Boon Reflection" to increase the life points you gain and increase the life points your opponent loses.

Overall, Feast of Blood is a good sorcery provided that you have a vampire themed deck. In a standard format, you want certain cards to compliment Feast of Blood. In an extended format, you want cards to really compliment the ability to gain life points.
