Behind the fountain in the yard there climbs
a pair of roses. Red and White, they twist
around the lattice, thorns as fingers laced.
there, from the ground from which they spring, small twigs
clasp at their stems. Last fall I pruned them both
but now they grow beyond what could have grown before.
