iPhone app reviews: ArithFit

Anyone who wants to have an educational app on his or her iPhone or iPod Touch will want ArithFit. At first, I was thinking, "Who would want to do math problems in their spare time?" That was before I decided to download this game. I actually first heard about this game when looking through Helium's computers and technology channel. I decided to search for it on iTunes, and lo and behold, the app appeared.

My first impression of this game was that it is very similar to other games I have played before in which the player has to match similar colored balls or spheres or bubbles in order to eliminate them and free up some space. ArithFit, however, takes that concept one step further. Instead of just matching colors, you have to match math sentences or problems. For example, there are three "bubbles" that are attached to each other and fall from the top of the screen. These bubbles will have a number written on each of them. The player has to try to make a logical math sentence that makes the most use of three bubbles so that those bubbles will disappear, making more room. For example, three bubbles with the number 3-3-6 may drop. To make a logical math sentence that will make three bubbles disappear, the player can look for bubbles that (connected) read 5-8. When a 3 from the falling bubble group falls on the 5-8 stationary bubble group, that makes a logical math sentence of 3+5=8.

As you can see, the game is very involved, but the player can customize the difficulty so that any age group can participate. This is a great math app for kids, too. I know that kids do not want to do math in their spare time. In fact, many of them do not want to do math problems when they are required to do so. This app changes the conception of math as something boring and predictable. The amount of possibilities and numbers on the screen at one time makes the player think more so than if the player were subjected to "traditional" ways of looking at math problems.

The simplicity of the game also gets points. The graphics are just right, and they are expected for an inexpensive game. All in all, I highly recommend this app for anyone who wants to make solving math problems just a little bit more interesting.
