Best ways to get through a boring meeting at work

There is a reason why they call meetings at work the bored meetings. You sit in a room and the best that they can offer you are some donuts, and maybe coffee. If you are lucky they will cater lunch, and that is the only reason that you can get through the meeting. As boring as the meetings are though, they do serve a purpose from time to time. How can you get through a meeting without having people stare at you or get yourself in trouble?

The first thing that helps me to get through a boring meeting is to crack as many jokes as possible to get everyone in the mood. Nobody likes to go to meetings, and everyone acts as though they have to be very proper, and be very polite to the boss. This isn't how you come up with ideas, and usually meetings are as much to bounce ideas off each other as it is to discuss the second quarter numbers.

It also helps when the presenter has a sense of humor about the whole thing. If the person running the meeting knows that this is either going to be boring, or they don't really have a whole lot to say, then it is going to be a lot of fun. I know it lightens the mood and everyone else doesn't feel so bad for assuming that the meeting wasn't going to teach anything new, or be really informative.

If you do have a person who is really into running the meeting, hopefully you are in a dark room, and you have a cell phone. If you are good at texting without making too much noise, you can easily be flirting with the woman across the room while the boss is going over the numbers. Either that, or you could be setting your DVR for what you are going to be watching after work. Heck, you might even be doing work that actually needs to get done on your Blackberry.

Getting through the meeting isn't always the most fun. Sometimes the food at the beginning of the meeting, or the lunch break is the only good part of the meeting. Maybe you even got to travel to it, and you got to see another city. Whatever you have to do, just stay awake, and keep yourself motivated, because you never know when this stuff might be important.
