Benefits of a personal budget worksheet

A budget worksheet is simply a concise and organized statement of how much money you expect to earn, alongside a plan of how you intend to allocate it amongst your many needs.

This worksheet can be a simple Excel spreadsheet that you have compiled yourself or you can download a pre-set one from the internet for free. The important thing is that you have clear categories for income and expenses and that your sheet is set up to subtract the total of your expenses from the income side of your budget.

Helps You to Save

Once you have detailed your expenses your budget will show how much discretionary income is available. This amount can be set up to be moved automatically into a savings account so there is no chance of spending. Budgeting also involves forecasting amounts that you intend to spend on categories of expenses based on your spending history. This exercise often reveals that there are opportunities to cut costs in many areas.

Keeps You From Over Spending

A budget worksheet puts your income and expenses side by side in black and white. This makes it easy to tell where your weak spots are so you can properly address them. For instance, if you discover that you are spending a huge amount on miscellaneous and unscheduled shopping trips it may be time to leave the credit cards at home and try using a cash only policy until you have your spending under control.

Makes it Possible to Achieve Goals

A budget worksheet helps you to realize goals because it makes it easy to channel funds into different directions. The structure of the budget means it is a simple step to add a column and allocate a realistic amount to the expense category. Of course, putting it into the budget is only half the battle; you still need to follow through in the real world. Making allocations automatic helps to force payments to be made. You need to be careful that your goals are realistic, otherwise you risk stretching yourself too thin.

Allows You to Track Your Progress

A budget worksheet is also a great tool because it provides a means to track your progress. This is beneficial because it can act as a motivator in weaker moments as well as make small changes if you think you can reach your goal faster. A budget is not a static document. It changes as situations in your life change and as old goals are achieved new ones crop up and the budget needs to adapt.

Everyone should take the time to set up a personal budget worksheet. It may take an hour or two to compile but it will change your financial path for the better.
