Tips for getting started in the Helium Marketplace

So you have finally found an article in the Marketplace that you really want to write too. Great! Now, how do you get started? There are a few steps that you need to take in order to get that Marketplace article started, and to make sure that you are on the right track with your article. I will take some time to explain how exactly you can get started in Marketplace, and hopefully get published.

The first thing that you want to do find a topic that is something you are willing to put some time into writing. If this is your first Marketplace article, you are going to want to show not only the publisher, but Helium, that you are able to write. The Marketplace is becoming much more lucrative, and is becoming harder to gain entry too. You need either one or three writing stars, or you need permission to gain entry to these titles.

This means that you need to put your best foot forward. Before you write an article, you should always read the publisher guidelines, and always read the title guidelines as well. The same publisher will usually have the same guidelines for all the articles, but they might also have some distinctions as well. Some might want headings, and others might not need headings, it all depends on what the guidelines say.

Make sure you write by the deadline that is posted. If you don't write by the deadline, you aren't going to be able to submit to the title. The staff might extend some deadlines, but once the deadline expires, there is no chance that you can submit, the deadline is just going to not allow you to submit anymore. Remember that Helium runs on GMT time which might mean you only have a couple hours even if it shows one day left.

Always cite your sources, and always make sure you are following the guidelines for sourcing, and for tone. Don't use first person if it isn't allowed, and always use sources if it is indicated that the publisher wants you to include a source. Whatever the publisher wants, the publisher should get. The word count is a limit as well, if you go over the maximum word count, the article won't submit.

The main thing with the Marketplace is to pay attention to the details. If you can keep the word count to the limit, and cite whatever sources you use, or they want used, you will do fine. Stay on topic, and write the best article that you can. Even if you don't get picked, you can always use the experience to your benefit.
