Magic the Gathering card analysis: Scion of Oona

"Scion of Oona" is a 1/1 blue faerie soldier printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the many cards printed in the Lorwyn set that encourage players to build around a theme of creatures. In respect to Scion of Oona, players are encouraged to build around the theme of faeries. In any faerie deck with blue cards, one should have Scion of Oona on hand for the most part. This is a card that makes faerie creatures look good.

The converted mana cost for Scion of Oona is three. You will need one blue mana and two colorless mana to play Scion of Oona onto the battlefield. For what Scion of Oona can do, paying three mana is pretty reasonable enough. The price is nothing compared to what Scion of Oona can do for you in the midst of a game.

What does Scion of Oona do in the first place?

The first ability of Scion of Oona is Flash. Cards with Flash can be played at any time you can play an instant spell. In short, you can play Scion of Oona at any time. Luckily, they did away with the ruling that cards with Flash have to be sacrificed at the end of the turn. You could play Scion of Oona before the start of your turn if you want to. This comes in pretty handy for the most part.

The second ability is Flying. If you attack with Scion of Oona and opponents do not have creatures with Flying or Reach, they are taking a point of combat damage. However, you do not want to use Scion of Oona offensively.

When Scion of Oona is on the battlefield, your other faeries get +1/+1. This is the third ability of Scion of Oona. This is good for the most part. When combined with "Oona, Queen of the Fae," you can use its main ability. You can then put a bunch of 1/1 blue and black faerie rogue tokens with Flying onto the battlefield. With Scion of Oona on the battlefield, they become 2/2 faeries with Flying. Having a bunch of 2/2 creatures with Flying comes in very handy.

You can even combine this with "Oona's Blackguard" which allows rogues that enter the battlefield to have an additional +1/+1 counter. With these three cards, you can produce a bunch of 3/3 faerie rogues.

The fourth ability is that other faeries you control get Shroud. It means that they cannot be the target of spells or abilities. In this respect, the only way to get rid of those faeries would be to play a spell such as "Wrath of God," "Damnation," or "Day of Judgment."

Overall, Scion of Oona is a great card to have for the most part. This is a good way to protect your faeries. Any faerie-themed deck should have a few Scion of Oona cards in this respect.
