Magic the Gathering card analysis: Shapesharer

Clones have always been a fun card in magic the gathering, but they have also always had one major problem. That problem is that there is always a strong incentive not to play them as whenever you do it seems that you opponent immediately puts into play a much larger and more powerful creature which makes you wish you still had the clone so it could copy that creature instead. Shapesharer fixes that problem in the way that many of the recent clone cards have.

Shapesharer is a rare shapeshifter from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs one blue and one colorless to put into play and is a changing which means that it is every creature type. More importantly though it has a powerful ability which costs one blue and two colorless and reads "Target Shapeshifter becomes a copy of target creature until your next turn."

Naturally the most common target for this will be the shapeshares since he is a 1/1 creature with no real abilities, but the fact that you can use this on any shapeshifter is still valuable especially since this is not a tapping ability. And since it is a shapeshifter the possible ways to use this card are almost limitless.

The most obvious usage for this card is naturally to copy the huge creature that your opponent has in play. This though leads to the likelyhood, since most creatures have the same power and toughness that you will be trading creatures. This will often be good but not always and there is no way to know that your opponent will have creatures out which are worth copying.

To overcome this it is better to have creatures you will want to copy, and this probably doesn't mean huge creatures. Instead tribal creatures are probably more valuable. Consider one of the better choices, the Scion of Oona. This is a fairy that gives all other fairies +1/+1 and shroud. It is blue which means it goes well with this shapeshifter and the scion will also make your shapeshifter harder to kill, but now with only three mana you can give the scion of oona shroud as well making it almost impossible for your opponent to kill any of your creatures and while you will have to use that every turn you can wait until your opponent casts the spell.

There are many other similar cards worth copying and with other shapeshifters you could even copy them multiple times giving every creature a large bonus.
