Magic the Gathering card analysis: Timber Protector

The ability to add +1/+1 to a creature is always of some value, but the value is variable with the tribe that is gaining that ability. The reason is simple enough, a tribe with a large number of small creatures getting +1/+1 is likely doubling the power of them while if the treefolk or giants get +1/+1 it is a minor damage boost to the two or three creatures that you have in play. So how do you make a creature for the treefolk tribe that allows you to give that bonus and still have the card be very valuable. Simple, you add another ability that makes the card more important.

Timber Protector is a rare treefolk warrior from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. A 4/6 creature it costs one green and four colorless mana to put into play and gives all other treefolk +1/+1. This is something that is worth having mostly because treefolk tend to have low powers and adding the extra 1 point of damage is going to let them kill things rather than blocking them forever.

There is a second ability on timber protector though that is going to make it exceptional in power. This is that the timber protect gives all other treefolk and forests that you have indestructibility.

This is a very good ability on two fronts. The first is that by making your treefolk indestructible it allows you to become more aggressive with them as you know that even if your opponent blocks them they will not die. It also makes it far more difficult for them to kill dorian the Siege tower because they will be forced to kill the timber protector.

The second value is in protecting your forests. This in most cases is going to be minor since land destruction has become a much smaller part of the game of magic in recent years but when it comes up it will be important. Of more value though is the ability to turn your forests into creatures. There are a few creatures that can do this and by making them indestructible it takes away the major reason that you would choose not to do so.

Naturally this card is going to be killed as soon as your opponent draws any creature removal but that is not a major problem since in the tribe of treefolk this is not one of the larger creatures but actually about average so your stronger creatures are still being protected.
