How respecting others will help win you friends at work

So much of day-to-day work can be about relationships, which makes it so odd that some people treat others poorly. There are times when people have to be serious or deal with an employee that has not done their job. However, discipline and conflict can still be done with a particular measure of respect. In the short-term, people can get away with disrespecting people but in the long run it usually benefits the individual to respect others. Not only does this help people be good colleagues, but also it helps with friendship. Therefore, here are a few thoughts on how respecting others will help win friends in the workplace.

Treated as a human being

The bottom line is that people want to be treated with respect, and they want to be seen as a human being. When people take an active interest in other people's lives, this can go a long way towards forging a friendship. People appreciate it when others ask about their family, personal interests, and recent events. Granted, some people are private about certain information but most of time there is an appreciation when people treat others as more than just colleagues.

Working on relationships

What people have to keep in mind is that success in life is often about networking with others. When people become friends with their co-workers, it can create a certain sense of loyalty that will translate over to other situations as the day-to-day operations progress. Granted, friendships can go up and down in the workplace and people do have to be careful in certain situations that they do not overstep boundaries. However, respect of others displays recognition that relationships are important and friendships can reap many personal and professional benefits.

Contributing to the team

Finally, respecting others will help win friends at work because it will demonstrate an understanding that work is a team effort. People want to be respected as individual personalities, but they do also want to be recognized for their work, their abilities, and their contribution to the organization. When someone treats someone else with respect from a professional standpoint, it says that they acknowledge their perspective and their value to the organization. This makes people feel good about themselves and about the person that is showing them respect.

Respect will not guarantee friendship, but it is often a good first step towards establishing a positive relationship. An individual does not have to manufacture administration that is not there, particular since some people are not necessarily great contributors to the organization. However, when people recognize that they themselves are just human and that they are not necessarily better than anyone else, this can lead to a general attitude of treating other people as equal members of an organization.
