If you are part of, or run an organization, you know that there are things that you need to do in order to be a socially conscious business. If you aren't able to be a part of the community, you aren't going to be a business for very long. Just because you are the big company in the town, it doesn't mean that good relations don't matter much. You need the will of the people to be a success in the areas that you operate.
The first thing that you need to do is be socially responsive to the area in which you are operating. This means that you have to be the business that provides value to the community. The biggest way you can do this to provide jobs, and services as well. This will help stimulate the local economy, and stimulate the business as well.
Once the people see the value that the business provides, you have to bank on the social capital that you have been given by the people. This doesn't mean that as soon as you gain the trust of the people that you simply do whatever you want. You have to use the goodwill of the people to further help out the community, and do more good for them.
This means that you should do community outreach. Set up an education fund, set up a task force of employees that can go out on weekends and help in the community. Whether it be to help build a house, or teach kids or adults how to read, and improve the lives of those around them. Giving adults new skills can add to your workforce, and help the business out as much as the community.
If you say that you are part of the community for the long haul, it would be wise to back up those words. Be there for everyone, and don't just sell out to where the money is. You can make a profit and still operate in an area where not everyone is a millionaire. The goal is to provide as much service to as many people as possible. Whether the people are rich or poor, everyone needs groceries, and everyone needs basic services.
A business or organization can be socially responsible in many ways. There are many easy ways in which a business can reach out to the community, and become a stalwart in the town without much effort. It just takes some good ideas, and some value for the people to make it work.
