Magic the Gathering card analysis: Thoughtweft Trio

Champion is a fun ability and once that works perfectly in lorwyn a set that focuses so fully on the tribal mechanics while it likely wouldn't work all that well with any other. The idea is simple and fun, you lose a creature when the creature with champion enters play but get it back when it leaves, and more importantly it allows for creatures that are larger without being overly expensive. But there is another less obvious advantage, in those tribes that focus on smaller creatures the champion mechanic is far less costly than in those with a majority of large creatures. This helps balance the strength of the tribes just a bit more, something that is always difficult.

Thoughtweft Trio is a rare kithkin soldier from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two white and two colorless and champions a kithkin, it is a 5/5 creature with vigilance and first strike. Since the odds are high that the kithkin that you are championing will be a 1/1 creature this is more than enough to make it worth playing but there is another ability on top of that.

This ability is that it can block any number of creatures, one that is relatively useful on the rare occasions when it appears but far more useful in combination with the two other abilities of this kithkin.

The first of the abilities completely ends one of the major problems of the creature that can block multiple creatures, that is that it was unable to attack without losing its value. With vigilance though you are able to attack and still have it to block.

The more interesting though is first strike, this is because combine with that ability it allows you to block much more than you might at first thing. Consider what happens if your opponent is playing with goblins and attacks with 9 1/1 goblins. You tell your kithkin soldier to block all nine, assign first strike damage killing five of them and then take only four damage from the remaining goblins. This isn't going to happen and if it does your opponent will likely kill the kithkin with a lightning bolt but its still a good exchange. More likely is that your opponent attacks with two three three creatures which you can block without dying because you kill one with first strike before they do any damage.
