Sometimes circumstances find you sharing a holiday alone with a loved one or perhaps a close friend. Large gatherings of family and friends are fun but a small dinner with someone you care about can be relaxing and just as enjoyable in its own way.
Here's a chance to get away from the traditions of Thanksgiving if you're so inclined. Not everyone is a turkey fan and if the two of you would prefer something else treat yourself on the special day. Talk it over and decide what you have a taste for be it traditional fare or not. Depending on your choices it's possible to make two separate main dishes if they're fairly simply. For instance cooking a turkey tenderloin and grilling a steak is possible without a great deal of stress.
You can purchase smaller portions, for instance if you both decide on turkey consider a turkey breast rather than the entire bird, and perhaps splurge more on things you both enjoy. Maybe a fine wine is on your list, or a large expenseive cut of meat, or perhaps an elegant desert you'd never think of spending your hard earned cash for on an ordinary day. Have fun planning your menu as you include things for your separate taste buds. Of course you'll still have to stay within your budget but indulge yourselves where it's possible.
Depending on your individual situation you may want to cook ahead so you can enjoy the games on the television or maybe you want to prepare the meal together. Work out your own game plan so the day is as stress free as possible.
If cooking is something you'd both rather avoid there are high quality pre-cooked meals available through restaurants and supermarkets. They'll prepare the food and you can simply pick-up, unpack and enjoy. It's another option that will allow the you to spend more time together. Some people would never consider this while others will jump at the chance. It all depends on the likes and dislikes of the individuals involved.
This is an opportunity to make things as casual or as elegant as you'd like. If romance is involved purchase some candles in the warm colors of the season and pick up a small centerpiece. You can make your own with some dried or fresh flowers and/or many other items associated with fall. It's up to you to set the atmosphere and give the day the special meaning it deserves.
It may be that you're celebrating with an old friend and all the two of you want to do is eat and watch a movie or the football games. Buy the beverage of your choice, set up trays by the television, get paper plates if it fits your fancy and enjoy. Don't be so overwhelmed by the traditions surrounding the holiday that you're scared to take a break. If your situation calls for a more relaxed atmosphere kick back and create a memory that will make you smile every time it comes to mind.
The important thing is that you celebrate in a manner enjoyable and meaningful to you. Whether it falls along traditional lines or not the day and company are to be enjoyed.
