Artificial vs real Christmas trees: How to choose the best tree for you

Can't decide whether to opt for an artificial Christmas tree or to plump for a real one? Here are a few ideas for you to consider, which may help you to make the right choice for you.

Cost

There are some fabulous artificial Christmas trees available nowadays but they can be quite pricey. However you need to bear in mind that such a tree could easily still be looking good 20 years down the road. Choose an artificial tree that is bought pre-lit, and possibly pre-decorated, if you want to minimise your costs completely.

If money is in very short supply a real tree could be more within your budget this year but of course it will need buying again next year. You could shop around for a real tree that is suitable for planting outdoors though, so that it can be re-used in the years to come.

Tradition

For many people a real Christmas tree is traditional. Everything about this type of tree from dressing it, watering it and the smell that it fills your room with, says Christmas. However you have to bear in mind that real trees have potential drawbacks, such as :

-They need some care and attention during the Christmas period.

-If the tree is not bought from sustainable stock there could be damaging effects on the environment.

-Real Christmas trees shed pine needles in varying degrees. Research the best tree for minimum shedding.

A real Christmas tree though often has a more individualistic shape and size.

Personal style

With artificial Christmas trees being available in various colours, shapes and sizes such a tree may fit your personal style better than a real tree. With everything from upside down trees, to those that appear cut in half and are displayed on a wall, the choice is vast. Many modern households find that black or silver Christmas trees suit their homes well.

Getting your tree home.

Real trees can be difficult to get home. If the retailer has no delivery service you could end up full of pine needles, which may irritate you in more ways than one. Pine needles stab you easily and some people are actually allergic to them.

After Christmas

An artificial Christmas tree is usually easily assembled and packed away for storing after Christmas. A real tree could be different. Many local councils though will offer free recycling for real trees.

Overall

It is really up to you. Both real and artificial Christmas trees have pros and cons. Think about where yo would ideally like to place a Christmas tree in your home and imagine how it will look. Once you consider the size of the space available you may find it easier to decide. All both type of trees come in varying sizes, real trees tend to be bushier and need more space.
