The 2009 World Series between the Yankees and Phillies may go down as one of the best played in recent memory. For a change this series had a little bit of everything coming from both teams which made this series exciting for the fans. While the Phillies put up a great fight, the Yankees had the ghosts of old Yankee Stadium on their side, but more importantly timely hitting. Now let's take a look at how the Yankees did it.
Game one in New York pitted former Indians teammates and Cy Young Winners C.C. Sabathia and Cliff Lee against other. Sabathia was decent, but Lee dominant shutting the Yankee Offense down in a 6-1 Phillie win. Lee racked up 10 strikeouts becoming the first pitcher to whiff ten or more opponents while walking none in a World Series game since 1949 when Don Newcombe pulled it off. Chase Utley added a pair of homers which was all the offense Philadelphia needed for the night. When the last out was recorded it looked like Philly shortstop Jimmy Rollins may have been correct in his prediction of taking the title in 5 games.
Gane 2 was one for the ages pitting Pedro Martinez against A.J. Burnett. Burnett had been struggling a bit through not just the postseason, but the entire year to some degree. Only two months earlier Pedro wasn't even officially in baseball still waiting for someone to show him the money after sitting out the first four months of the season. Pedro made Yankee hitters look foolish whiffing 8 over 6 innings. he made two mistakes, one to mark Teixeira and another to Hideki Matsui which both landed in the seats. Burnett was better though going seven innings deep striking out 9 and giving up one run.Mariano Rivera collected six outs for the save and a 3-1 Yankee victory. Ever confident, the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a front page that stated "Yankees Avoid Sweep."
Philadelphia hosted game 3 with Andy Pettitte holding off the Philly offense just enough to beat Cole Hamels. Jayson Werth was the offensive star hitting two homers in a losing effort. All told six pitches left the hitter friendly ballpark as Cole Hamels couldn't find the any part of the plate other than dead center wasting the 3-0 lead he was handed to protect. Alex Rodriguez finally collected a World Series homerun, but not one without controversy. For the first time in World Series history instant replay was used to determine his hit was not a double, but a homerun that hit the lens of a television camera and bounced back into play. Mariano Rivera closes out a second
