Bulletin board ideas: Texas

Texas is called the Lone Star state and is the second largest state in the Union. However, apart from these well-known facts, your students may not know much of Texas's history. Fortunately, American primary school teachers have the opportunity to teach their students about the 50 states that comprise the Union. Additionally, Texas has played an important part in the United States' history, and it should be a state well worth studying. The following article will help you create and design a Texas-themed bulletin board that will attract your students' attention and help them learn more about this interesting state.

First, you will need to decorate the bulletin board so that it attracts as much attention as possible. This is easy to do using colorful backgrounds, trim and borders as well as catchy titles. You will usually find these materials at arts and crafts stores at generally inexpensive prices. You will also be able to find cut out alphabets and letters from discount stores or from educational supply stores. Additionally, you can cut out letters yourself.

After the initial decorations have been made (and you can include your students in the process), you can then begin adding the information to the bulletin board. Usually, you will need to type this information and print it out. You will need to first summarize the history of Texas. This can easily be done using bulleted paragraphs and sentences, but try to make it as concise and short as possible. The bulletin board is about conveying information quickly and easily.

Pictures can be a great addition to the bulletin board since they attract attention so well. You can generally find good pictures from websites and then print them out, or you can use photocopied pictures from textbooks. Alternatively, you can use actual photographs.

Remember to use thumbtacks whenever you want to add these components to the bulletin board. Thumbtacks prevent damage to the boards and you can easily take down the information once you are done with it.

Finally, remember to add a "fun facts" section. These are facts that are fun and interesting to your students, and they will generally be less well known. For example, "Texas comes from a Spanish misunderstanding of the Caddo Indian word tejas, meaning friend" (1). This is an interesting fact that many people do not know. You can generally distinguish fun facts from historical ones easily.
