Bulletin board ideas: Nevada

Nevada is often called the Silver State. Many of your students should be familiar with the location of this particular state, but do they know Nevada's history? This is where your classroom's bulletin board steps in. You can create an informational, fun and engaging bulletin board that teaches your students about the great state of Nevada. Here are a few basic instructions and ideas on how to create a Nevada-themed bulletin board.

First, you will need to add trim to the bulletin board. Not only does the trim make the bulletin board look appealing, but it also attracts your students' attentions. You can find these trims at teaching supply stores or you can even order them online. They are easy to make if you are artsy, and the materials to make trim can be found at most arts and crafts stores.

Next, you will need to decide what kind of information you want to include. You may think about including the history of the state, since this is an important aspect in learning about any event, place, or person. Moreover, you will probably want to include "fun" information. You can usually differentiate "fun facts" from "historical facts" because the "fun facts" are usually quirky or less well-known pieces of information. For example, "Nevada is the only state to possess a complete skeleton - approximately 55 feet long - of an ichthyosaur, an extinct marine reptile" (1). This information is considered to be a "fun fact" because it is not well-known. However, the name of the governor of Nevada is not a fun fact. It is a historical fact.

Pictures are always a welcome addition to any educational tool. Many young students will enjoy looking at pictures more than reading words, especially since pictures sometimes do convey "a thousand words." So, choose your images wisely. You can either download pictures from websites and print them, make photocopies of your own pictures or from textbooks, or use actual photographs.

As you can see, creating a bulletin board is not that difficult to do. Once you are finished making your bulletin board, be sure to go over the information with your students.

The following resources will help you find fun facts, images, and historical information about the state of Nevada for use in your bulletin board. You can also give this information out to your students if they want to explore these websites themselves.
