Bulletin board ideas: Michigan

Bulletin boards can be a great way to spread information in the classroom. Not only is it stationary, allowing for your students to check the information on a daily basis, but it can also be attractive and catch your students' eyes. It is an effective way to teach your students without having to literally teach. The following article will help you create a bulletin board that is about the state of Michigan, but you can change the topic to your liking and the instructions will basically stay the same.

First, you will need to find trim that relates to your topic. These trims or borders are most often found at educational tools/materials supplies stores, or you can find them online and download and print them out. Nevertheless, these trims add design and appeal to your bulletin board, catching your students' eyes long enough for them to look over the information.

Next, you will need to create sections that will tell about the history of Michigan, its importance to the Union, or why it is interesting to learn about. For example, you can do all of these three things by using pictures. You can find these online or, if you have been to Michigan or have access to actual photographs, you can use these and thumbtack them to the bulletin board. Pictures a great way to teach your students because many young students always find pictures to be more interesting than words.

The history of the state can easily be revealed using block paragraphs. You don't have to write the full history of the state. It is always better to minimize in this situation, especially since a bulletin board is designed to be read quickly. So, you can also use bulleted short paragraphs or sentences to convey this information.

A "fun facts" section is always appreciated. Your students will be able to learn more about Michigan than its "hard" facts. For example, a fun fact would be that "Michigan has more than 3,000 miles of shorelinethat's longer than the distance from Maine to Florida" (1). This is a fun fact because it is not normally known. However, a "fun fact" would not include the name of the governor of Michigan.

When you finish the inside of the bulletin board, make sure that it has a catchy title. Titles can easily be made using cut out letters. The resource at the end of this article will help you find more fun facts as well as maps and images for you to print and use.
