Just because you're the king of a realm and are expected to tend to political manoeuvrings doesn't mean you can't have a few hobbies on the side. Lucky for Edgar Roni Figaro, however, his hobby - machinery - lines up quite nicely with his politics, as his kingdom of Figaro thrives on machines.
As such Edgar's battle tactics often involve using machines to his advantage. He's otherwise a standard sword and spear fighter, true, but with his tools at his disposal Edgar becomes a potent force in a fight. Like any other Command in the game Edgar's Tools aren't always useful, and they don't remain great forever, but for at least the first half of the game Tools makes Edgar one of the best characters to have in a party.
The nice part about Tools is that, for the most part, they're found in towns. Tools don't require fancy inputs or steady leveling, just attention to the goods of merchants along the way. And once Edgar buys his Tools, they're permanent: the Auto Crossbow he gets at the beginning of the game will last until the end. The same can't be said for other bought items, like, say, Shadow's Throw weapons.
The only problem with Edgar's Tools is their long-term viability. They're great until the early parts of the World of Ruin but then slowly peter out, losing credence in the face of Edgar's normal attacks. Once that happens, don't feel too bad about abandoning the things - they'll have served an excellent purpose up until that point as it is.
Auto Crossbow: Probably THE best attack for the beginning of the game. Auto Crossbow hits every enemy on the screen with perfect accuracy and does great damage. It'll lose power after a while, unfortunately, and isn't so great against single enemies.
Noiseblaster: A nice attack that hits every opponent with confusion.
Bioblaster: An excellent, all-hitting attack that does poison damage to every enemy and may cause poison. It's best used against biological enemies, and does little damage to mechanical enemies like Magitek Armor.
Drill: An excellent, single-hitting weapon that does tons of damage by ignoring the enemy's defense. It's a more reliable alternative than the Cahinsaw when fighting bosses immune to instant death.
Flash: A good all-hitting device that does magic damage and may inflict dark on every opponent. It won't get as much use despite its usefulness since it comes in a bit later in the game, however, and at the same time as Drill.
Chainsaw: An awesome weapon that will either do a ton of damage to one enemy or kill them automatically when Edgar dons a goalie mask. Because the auto-death attack doesn't work on bosses, however, Chainsaw can prove a hit-or-miss damage dealer.
Debilitator: A weird tool that assigns a random elemental weakness to a single enemy. Since it doesn't really work on bsoses it's not that great.
Air Anchor: Another weird tool that will hit the enemy with instant death the next time they attack. Enemies immune to instant death are obviously immune to its effects, and since it only appears late in the game its uses are limited.
