Magic the Gathering card analysis: Profane Command

"Profane Command" is a black sorcery spell printed as rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." So far, it seems that Profane Command seemed to be that good that it ended up being reprinted as a rare for the special set known as "Planechase." This is one of the five "Command" spells printed for Lorwyn. So far, Profane Command seems to be one of the most interesting sorceries printed in the Lorwyn block.

The converted mana cost for Profane Command is two. You will need two black mana and X colorless mana. For what Profane Command can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it for the most part. Keep in mind that Profane Command is a sorcery spell and can only be cast during your turn.

What does Profane Command do in the first place?

Like the other "Command" sorceries in Lorwyn, you get to pick two out of four effects. With Profane Command, you get two spells for the price of one. Depending on the situation, Profane Command could be your best friend. So far, it seems to be good in a black control deck or a black aggressive deck.

The first effect makes a target player lose X life points. In this respect, if you paid six mana for the X cost, the target player loses six life points. So far, this ability can be grouped with "Wound Reflection." Wound Reflection doubles the amount of life points lost. In this respect, the target player would lose at least twelve points of life by the end of the turn.

The second effect allows you to bring back a target creature from your graveyard with the converted mana cost of X or less back onto the battlefield. You can bring back a useful creature from your graveyard. Because of this effect, Profane Command becomes a very useful spell. Keep in mind that this is one of the affects you can choose out of the four.

The third effect makes a target creature gain -X/-X until the end of the turn. Using the example for the first effect, the target creature would receive -6/-6 until the end of the turn. This is good for taking out a threatening creature. Also, creatures killed in this fashion cannot be regenerated. This is due to them not being killed via damage. Think of this is a good way to get rid of annoying creature. Make sure the target creature neither has Shroud nor Protection from Black.

The fourth effect allows X target creatures to gain Fear until the end of the turn. In a black aggressive deck, this is a good effect. Fear means that your opponents cannot block creatures unless they have black and/or artifact creatures. If they do not, you can swing with your creatures for the kill.

Overall, Profane Command is a rather interesting card for the most part. For any black deck, Profane Command is something that is worth picking up for the most part.
