Magic the Gathering card analysis: Primal Command

"Primal Command" is a green enchantment spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the five different "Command" spells printed in the Lorwyn block. If you are playing a green deck with creatures, Primal Command seems to be something that is worth looking into for the most part.

The converted mana cost for Primal Command is five. You will need two green mana and three colorless mana to play Primal Command. For what Primal Command can do, the converted mana cost seems to be well worth it. Keep in mind that Primal Command is a sorcery spell and can only be played during your turn.

What does Primal Command do in the first place?

You get to choose two out of four effects. In a sense, you get to play two spells for the price of one. Depending on the situation, you can pick whatever you effects that are considered important to the situation.

The first effect allows a target player to gain seven points of life. This can be pretty helpful if you need the life points. However, this is not a great of an effect should you be defenseless and an opponent has a way to swipe a lot of life points away from you.

The second effect causes a target noncreature permanent to return to the top of its owner's library. This is good for getting rid of some annoying enchantments, artifacts, or planeswalkers for the time being. If an opponent has a planeswalker on the battlefield and is close to setting off the ultimate ability, you can play Primal Command and pick this effect. When the opponent plays the planeswalker again, s/he has to start from scratch all over again.

The third effect allows a target player to shuffle a creature form his/her graveyard back into his/her library. If you have a creature you want to bring back, you can always use this effect. Just make sure an opponent does not do something that causes your graveyard to be Exiled.

The fourth effect lets you search your library for a creature card. You reveal the creature and put it in your hand. Then you shuffle your library afterwards. In a sense, think of this as somewhat similar to "Tinker." You can search for any creature in your library. That includes a very powerful creature.

Overall, Primal Command is a pretty handy sorcery spell in regards to bringing back creatures. Again, you get to pick two out of the four effects. You could possibly bring back two creatures. Or, you can shuffle a specific creature from your graveyard into your library and then pull it out of your library and into your hand.
