How to stay active during the winter

The winter time means that there is going to be a lot of dark nights, dark days, and cold temperatures. While it is easy to stay active during the summertime when the days are long, and the outside air is pleasant, it can be very hard to keep up the same energy level during the winter. The cold and darkness can zap us of our energy, or will to go out and stay active. So what can we do to combat this?

The first thing you want to do is find the best ways of staying active indoors. Whether this means getting a treadmill, or getting a Wii Fit, you should do whatever you can to make sure that you are staying active during those cold months. Using a treadmill might be boring for some, but the Wii is usually a good time, even when you are just working out.

You should try to get outdoors if at all possible. Even if you are just going to take a five or ten minute run before coming back inside, the cold air can actually wake you up, and give you a boost of energy. If you have a high tolerance to the cold, you could even do your workout outside if you want, just make sure that you have the ability to get warm quick if need be.

Use plenty of light to guide your activity. Humans need light to stay active, and when it gets dark, our bodies assume that it is time to go to sleep. Even if you have the lights on in the house, you are going to be more awake than if you walk around a dark house all the time. So if you can keep the lights on, you are going to be more active during the winter.

Make sure you are getting good rest and that you are staying healthy in other ways. Try do keep your sugar intake, and other caffeine levels to a reasonable amount. If you are able to stick to a healthy diet, you should keep your energy up, and try to combat the harmful effects of the snow and cold on your energy level.

If you can manage to just stay around some light, and use the cold air as something that can actually wake you up, and get your blood going, you should be able to pull off an active winter. It can be a tough thing to do, but it can be done with a little extra work, and some seasonal adjustments.
