What to pack when traveling abroad with a pet mainly depends on three things. One is where you are traveling. Two is What kind of pet you have. Last is how long you are traveling.
Where you are traveling is the number one priority as it can effect not only what you will need, but if it is legal to take. If you will mainly be staying in hotel rooms in a large city, you will not only need to take a control means, such as a leash, but also a means of removing and handling waste while traveling. Sounds simple, but it may not be. Also, is your pet on any type of medication and is that medication available or restricted in the country where you are traveling? For the same reason, pack your pet's health documents to show vaccinations. If you forget this, your pet may only see the airport.
Now comes the question of what sort of pet you have. Some animals are not allowed in some countries, so check, it is easy with the Internet. Also, some pet supplies may be easy to obtain in the area you will be traveling and some aren't. Dog food is usually available everywhere, but mice to feed the pet snake may be a problem, so feed it well before leaving and hope it doesn't get hungry during the trip. All pets will need some type of restraint, so be sure to pack two leashes or halters, one will either get lost or break! That is a fact that if something is important to you or your pet, pack extras. This can be medicine, but it can also be a favorite type of blanket or toy, or a warm coat to keep Fido warm on the ski slopes.
Then there is how long will you be traveling? If it is just a short jaunt abroad, you won't need to pack as much and it might be better for your pet to not take it with you. Get a friend to watch over it or find a reputable boarding kennel. It prevents the pet from being exposed to foreign foods or diseases and being cramped into small areas for long time periods. The longer the flight the greater the discomfort for the pet and a short place with a long flight may hurt the animal more than being separated for a few days for its owner.
what to pack will depend upon the pet. Essentials include a means of restraint, health information, and food if needed.
