Ways to get young children excited about basketball evolve around the beginnings of the game, real or imaginary. Young children simply love stories and movement. They also love a sense of achievement, and some children tend to give up easily when they find themselves unable to succeed. As the attention span of children is also short, often lasting between five to fifteen minutes at most, activities must be on the go and changing, in order to captivate them for a longer time.
Basketball involves natural body movements involving thrust, such as throwing and tossing. There are plenty of ways, even within the home to get young children involved and excited about throwing and tossing. They can toss plastic bottles and jars, small balls, stuffed toys, and even crumpled balls of paper into the laundry basket, the waste bin, and plastic containers with a wide opening. Begin with a short distance of one to two feet, depending on the age of the children.
Gradually increase the distance as the children gain confidence and experience in throwing. You can change the container, the distance, and the place to put the container whenever you see the children showing signs of restlessness or boredom. Do not push the children to do more than they can feel excited about. You do not want to kill their natural interest by forcing them into doing something they are not willing to. Let their excitement grow with the increased challenges every now and then. Give lots of praises and cheers when they succeed in getting a throw.
As the children grow older and stronger in their arms, move on to hanging basketball hoops and small rubber balls that will not hurt when they fall accidentally onto the children's heads. Hook them onto cabinet doors for a comfortable height. As the children gain confidence in throwing the ball, hanging the hoops onto taller cabinets. Ensure the cabinets are nowhere near priceless antiques and other breakable memorabila.
Allow children to view games on television with a group of men who are crazy over basketball. Ensure that the men would display exemplary behavior during the bad moments of the game, though. You do not want the children to pick up vulgarities that should not be part of their vocabulary. A visit to the sports hall for a basketball match is also a great way to get the children drawn into the excitement of the crowds. Teach them simple cheers and explain the happenings of the game in different terms.
