Magic the Gathering card analysis: Purity

"Purity" is a 6/6 white elemental incarnation printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the five different elemental incarnations printed in the Lorwyn set. From the looks of Purity, you could put this in a deck full of elementals for the most part. With the right combination of cards, you can definitely get a lot of Purity.

The converted mana cost for Purity is six. You will need three white mana and three colorless mana to play Purity. For what Purity can do, the converted mana cost seems to be somewhat worth it. However, the casting cost is pretty steep because you need three white mana. You will need to have some good mana fixing and mana acceleration if you want to bring Purity onto the battlefield early enough. If the casting cost was one white mana and five colorless mana, it may be easier to play Purity.

What does Purity do in the first place?

The first ability of Purity is that it has Flying. Should you attack with Purity and your opponent has no creatures with Flying or Reach, s/he is taking up to six points of combat damage. But, this is not the main ability of Purity.

Should any noncombat damage be dealt to you, Purity will prevent it from happening. In turn, you gain life points equal to the damage prevented that way. Whenever a spell or ability causes you damage, Purity stops it. Say that a spell or ability plans to deal four points of damage to you, Purity prevents it. In this respect, you gain four points of life.

When Purity is put into the graveyard from anywhere, you shuffle it back into your library. In this respect, the only way to get rid of Purity is to Exile it from the game. You can discard it if you want and it gets shuffled back into your library.

However, you can abuse the second ability. In a pure white deck, you can use "Boon Reflection." Boon Reflection doubles the life points you receive whenever. In this respect, the life points you gain via Purity's ability will be doubled with Boon Reflection.

In a black and white deck, you can combine this with "Pestilence," "Sanguine Bond," and "Wound Reflection." You can also keep Boon Reflection in.

With Pestilence, you can deal one point of damage to each creature and player for each black mana spent. You can deal perhaps four points of damage via Pestilence. Purity will prevent the damage from happening to you. You would get four points of life via Purity. Boon Reflection doubles the life points. With Sanguine Bond, you can make a target opponent lose that much life. Wound Reflection doubles the life points that your opponents lose.

Overall, Purity is a pretty impressive card. With the right cards, this becomes a fascinating card to have in a white deck. Combined with certain black cards, opponents should think twice before trying any funny business with you.
