It is very difficult to choose an actress that would make a best friend without relating them to a role they played in a film. Unless you personally saw them in an interview displaying some characteristics you like or could relate to, it is still a very tough choice. Interviews are short and the actresses still must maintain a certain faade about themselves to the public making it difficult to see the true person. Of course they will be at their best in an interview and for this reason I have to stick with a character in the hopes that they have some of these qualities in their personal lives.

For me, my first choice would be Kathy Bates as I relate her to the role of Evelyn Couch, an unhappy housewife in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes". She befriends Ninny Threadgood played by Jessica Tandy who is in a nursing home and told her stories about Idgie Threadgood and Ruth Jameson from the Whistle Stop Caf in Alabama. Throughout the movie, she struggles with depression, overeating, being overweight, her dull husband Ed and the change of life. She is inspired by the tales spoken by Ninny whose stories gave her so much encouragement and confidence that allowed her to take charge of her life and become her own individual. I think maybe because I can relate to this character in some ways it intrigued me to wish I could be friends with her. She made me laugh, cry and grow a little bit myself throughout the experience of watching this film.

My second choice would have to be Olympia Dukakis and again I have to relate her to two of my favorite roles that make me feel like I wish I was there with her. One role is of course Rose Castorini in "Moonstruck" where she played the mother of Loretta Castorini performed by Cher and took home the Golden Globe Award for her performance. She is fun, has a sense of humor and makes you wish you were her friend as she goes through all the drama in this film. One other film where her character makes you want to be her friend was her role as Clairee Belcher in "Steel Magnolias", one of the southern women centered on the beauty shop in Louisiana. Her relationship with all the women especially Ouiser Boudreaux played by Shirley MacLaine is comical, serious and very genuine.

Both are fantastic actresses and display some of the characteristics in these movies that make me wish I was friends with them.

When you think about it, I could probably name many more actresses based on characters and I am sure you could too. I would have loved to have lived in the apartment building with Lucy and Ethel or the house in Miami with the Golden Girls. However, how do we really know what kind of person any of these actresses are that would make you want to be their best friend? It is very difficult to not relate them to a character that made you wish just for a few minutes that you could be right there with them.
