How your lifestyle can cause weight gain

When people objectively evaluate their lifestyles, it isn't terribly difficult to figure out why they gain weight. We live in a society that celebrates consumption of food and there never seems to be a shortage of alcohol in most social gatherings. In addition, there are plenty of people that work out but they do not necessarily exercise enough to offset their other choices. Therefore here are a few thoughts on how one's lifestyle can cause weight gain.

I like to eat

In Western society food is a constant variable in people's daily lives. Plenty of individuals start their day with a large caffeinated beverage and a pastry that can literally pack hundreds of calories. In the middle of the morning there may be a snack, which is followed closely by an unhealthy lunch. Another snack occurs in the middle of the afternoon and people top off the day by consuming a large dinner. If people go out, they may start the meal with an appetizer, move onto a soup or salad, consume an over-sized entree even if they are already full, and finish off the experience with dessert. This may also include various sugary or alcohol-based beverages. Granted, this may not be a daily routine but for some people it occurs often enough that it turns into a lifestyle.

The lonesome gym membership

There are health clubs all of the country and there are certainly people that work out and stay fit. However, there are plenty of people that have gym memberships but never go. There are some people that do go, but after going to the gym they reward themselves by consuming some food item that more than offsets the calories burned during the workout. Too often, visits to the gym are not regular enough or intense enough to combat daily intake and other lifestyle choices.

Sleep and stress

Finally, there are the intangibles that impact the lifestyle of many individuals. Some people stay up very late at night on a regular basis and watch all sorts of bad television. This causes them to start the next day without proper rest, which can lead to more caffeine and more comfort eating. In addition, lack of sleep can also contribute to stress, which plenty of individuals have anyway. For some people, being stressed is a societal expectation, as people can find that misery loves company and individuals love to swap stories about how overwhelmed they are in their daily lives.

In general terms, if people want to be healthier and want to lose weight, they have to be serious about certain lifestyle choices. The key is that people have to change for the long term. Many individuals do not succeed with diets or other short-term solutions because they do not want to change their habits for the rest of their life. People enjoy certain things, but if they really want to change their life, there has to be sacrifice that turns in the habit.
