NBA: Boston Celtics 2009-10 season preview

Before the 2007-08 season, the Boston Celtics brought in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to team with Paul Pierce, thinking that the group of veterans would be able to band together to create something special. Everything went exactly as planned for them, as they dispatched the Los Angeles Lakers en route to the 17th title in franchise history. Last season, they hoped for more of the same, and things were looking good again.

However, they were bit by the injury bug to Kevin Garnett, whose season ended after just 57 games. While there were initially hopes that he would be able to return, he was forced to miss the entire playoffs. After outlasting the Chicago Bulls in an epic 7-game series, they didn't have enough to beat the Orlando Magic, and their playoff defense ended in the second round.

This offseason, they made some small changes in hopes of getting back to the championship level. The biggest thing, of course, was the return of Kevin Garnett. Even if he is not quite the player he used to be as he is getting older, his defensive presence and intensity adds a whole new dimension to the team that was missing last season. If he is healthy, then the Celtics will be strong contenders for the Title again. Other than that, the team made small changes to upgrade depth. Rasheed Wallace was the big name signing, but they also brought in Shelden Williams and Marquis Daniels.

The key to the team is Rajon Rondo and his continued development. He was great in the postseason last year, and is one of the best PGs in the NBA. He is not much of a shooter, but he has a great all-around game. He is a great passer, great rebounder for his size, and one of the best defenders at his position in the NBA. He has long arms and lots of athleticism, which makes him very good on the ball and in passing lanes.

The heart of the team is Paul Pierce. He has become one of the best all-around players in the NBA, bringing it on both the offensive and defensive end. At age 32 he is as good as ever, and he (along with KG) sets the tone for the team every night. He might not put up gaudy numbers, but there is no doubt about his talent and what he means to the team.

Early on, Boston appears to be a very strong contender for the title once again. They are back healthy and playing great basketball, and the intensity of the title team is back in full force. If they can remain healthy and continue to find their fountain of youth, they will be extremely difficult to beat in the postseason.
