Christmas is just around the corner and the usual things are starting to happen. Stores have already begin setting up their Christmas displays. Halloween ends and the journey to Christmas begins. The Christmas decorations adorn a large section of stores. New signage reminding people that Christmas is closer than they think goes up. Everything starts to make the annual Christmas transformation to prepare for the season of comfort and joy.
Another thing starts to happen as well, money starts to be spent. A little here and a little there. Slowly but surely the expenses of Christmas start rolling in and our wallets start to become empty for too soon. There are the expenses of gifts, traveling, extra food, Christmas cards and a host of other things. The list of expenses may even cause headaches just thinking about them.
Everyone seems to know the simple and obvious ways to save money during the holiday rush but are there other less obvious ways to save money? Are there some unusual ways to save some money during the holiday season? Here are a few ideas for unusual savings this Christmas season.
Skip the gift exchanges
Every workplace or social gathering seems to have gift exchanges. Ten dollars here and twenty dollars there begin to add up if there are several. Want to save some money? Skip those gift exchanges. Gift exchanges are usually an absolute waste of money. No one actually buys anything that anyone else wants. When was the last time that anyone got something decent at a gift exchange? It happens on rare occasions but most of the time the gifts are not something we would actually want or need. Stop wasting the money and skip the exchanges.
Leave the holiday light displays in storage
One forgotten expense of Christmas is the utility bill that hits home once the holidays are over. Maybe it is time to leave those large light displays for the front yard in storage. Stringing the lights and setting everything up takes a lot of work. The time and effort could be spent on doing something else. Be sure to leave the interior Christmas Tree and lights on display. No one wants to be a Scrooge. Maybe even just cut back on those light displays instead of going cold turkey. The point is simple there is money to be saved by cutting down on those holiday lights.
Stop sending Christmas Cards
One easy way to save money on Christmas Cards is to simply stop sending them. Many people simply open the card see who it is from and then either add it to the pile or throw it away. Sometimes it seems rather pointless to send all of those cards for people just to throw them away. In some ways, Christmas cards are another waste of money during the holidays.
Buy an artificial Christmas Tree
Instead of going out and searching for the perfect Christmas Tree to cut down, buy artificial. An artificial tree is safer with fire hazards and is more cost effective. An artificial tree can last for many years and will save the cost of buying a new tree each year. The cost may be higher the first year but having an artificial tree for ten years can save significant amounts of money.
There are ways to save money during the Christmas season but the question is are people willing to think outside the box? Are they willing to do things differently or will they stay in the same rut year after year? Take control this Christmas do something unusual and take back the comfort and joy of the season.
