Is it better to be loved or feared?

by Sarah Arnette

Created on: November 04, 2009

Many people believe that in order to keep balance in a home, business, or country, they must strike fear into the people. By striking fear into individuals, they believe that they can curb any outbursts and keep the peace. Often this fear is the root of the outbursts though, and not the solution. For lasting peace, love is the answer.

There has always been this notion that if one wishes to have a stable home, a sturdy business, or rule a country, one must strike fear and intimidation into those who surround them. While this may work temporarily, there is no evidence that this works long term.

For those who strike fear at home, either by physically or emotionally abusing their partners and children, the result may be immediate, however, as time passes, the individuals being mistreated tend to leave. It is very difficult for one to maintain control as the controlled individuals work to find ways around the control. In addition, friends or relatives who encounter the abuse may convince the abused to leave or press criminal charges on the abuser. The fear of the unknown that the abuser often causes can be replaced with an understanding that there is little worse than what one is living with in their present situation.

A loving partner or parent is one that is respected for their fair approach on situations and their non-violent behaviors. These parents and partners are more likely to have children or partners that are better balanced and less likely to have partners or children that are influenced by drugs or alcohol. Loving parents or partners often have long lasting and honest relationships.

Those who strike fear at work are often seen as the bully boss. Unfortunately for the bully boss, the employees are less likely to simply suffer through the abuse than those who may encounter it at home. This is because it is much easier for an employee to find satisfaction at another job, with a nicer boss, than it is for families to split due to abuse. Another situation that a bully boss may encounter is the employees filing complaints against him or her for causing a hostile work environment. While being the loving boss is never good, and often causes employees to be lax on their work assignments; being a bully boss often causes good employees to leave and bad employees to sabotage work.

Being a loving boss is not always an answer, but to be a fair boss often is. This means to hold policies firmly and expect people to follow these policies. It means rewarding
