Book reviews: 16 Lighthouse Road, by Debbie Macomber

16 Lighthouse Road is the first book in Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove series. In this book she introduces the reader to some of the ordinary people who live in this town and lets them take a look into their daily lives filled with joy and sadness. It is hard to pinpoint any one main character in this book as equal attention seems to be paid to at least two of the characters - Cecilia Randell and Olivia Lockhart.

The first chapter of this book gives the impression that the storyline will concentrate on Cecilia Randell who is in the process of divorcing her husband, Ian. The couple has been married for less than a year and for six months of that time he has been on a Navy submarine on a secret mission. Cecilia was pregnant when they got married, but the little girl, Alison died shortly after birth. She was extremely upset that her messages about the death of the baby to Ian had gone unanswered. Ian was not aware of this event because his commanding officer had not informed him of the messages. Cecilia was unable to accept his explanations and had filed for a divorce.

They had a pre-nuptial agreement in place stating that they would share the expenses incurred during the marriage but because Cecilia was working in a bar, her income was not sufficient to repay her share of the bills. Thus, the couple had to go to court to have this agreement rescinded. Olivia was the judge presiding over the case and she decided that she would not rescind the agreement and advised the couple to try to work out their differences.

Other characters are gradually brought into the plot of the novel as the events in the lives of both characters unfold. Charlotte is Olivia's mother and she spends a lot of her time volunteering at the Old-age home in Cedar Cove. It is here she meets Tom, the victim of a stroke that left him unable to speak. His original request had been that he stay in the home in Cedar Cove, but he had been in a facility in Seattle where he was mistreated. Charlotte becomes his friend and he entrusts her with the key to a safe deposit box.

Grace is a friend of Olivia's and the two take aerobics classes once a week. She is married to Dan amd has two grown daughters. She is unhappy in her marriage and suspects that there is something going on with Dan.

Another character in the story is the newspaper reporter, Jack Griffin, who sat in on the Cecilia Randell case and wrote a story about Olivia for the newspaper. This event brings the two into closer contact and they become
