Whether you are firmly grounded in a career, or just starting out, there are certain essential wardrobe items to acquire in order to ensure you make a good impression and are viewed as a serious businesswoman.
When making clothing purchases, opt for quality over quantity. Spending a little more for classic styles, that will stand the test of time, is more cost-effective in the long run.
A successful businesswoman cannot afford for her wardrobe to look outdated or distractingly fussy. The measure of a well-dressed woman is when, in retrospect, you know she looked well put-together and attractive, but you cannot remember exactly what she was wearing.
Essential wardrobe items for a career woman:
* Black fitted blazer
Separate jackets, pants and skirts will extend your wardrobe better than a suit. A black blazer can be combined with black pants or skirt for a suit appearance, or can be worn over a dress. For casual business meetings, or travel, a black blazer is a good, conservative complement for dress jeans.
* Black boot-cut dress slacks
One pair is essential, several are desirable. This will potentially be the most frequently accessed item in your wardrobe. All colors and styles of tops can be paired with black dress slacks, and worn with the black blazer, when necessity dictates, you have a proper business suit.
* Classic white blouse
The all purpose classic white blouse is a must for every career woman's closet. Besides being the perfect under dressing for a suit, it can be worn alone, with a vest, or accessorized with a scarf.
* Basic black dress
The little black dress prevails, even in the business world. It can be topped with a jacket for daytime and transformed into appropriate attire for an evening event. Simple gold or silver jewelry will both go well with black.
* Trench coat
A neutral toned trench coat is a necessary career woman's outerwear in any climate. They are available in long and shorter lengths for a classic, yet trendy, look.
* Large tote purse
A career woman's choice of purse should be large enough to hold any office-related items pertaining to her job, as well as compartments for wallet, glasses, cell phone etc... Carrying both a purse and a briefcase is awkward and unprofessional. A large, conservative purse/tote will be more serviceable.
* A conservative watch
No career woman wants to be without a watch. One that contains a calendar and an alarm is ideal. You want to be able to keep track of time wherever you are, be able to peruse important
