People in our society have been going back and forth on whether or not, violent video games contribute to real life violence, and none have been so widely debated then Grand Theft Auto. A video game where you can steal cars, shot people and in some reports rape prostitutes.
According to a story done by Fox News in 2007 nearly 97% of the teen population in the US alone play video games of one kind or another. Thats almost every teenager in the us alone. Since we know that teenagers play video games, what about their younger siblings? How many of the 97% of teenagers that play these video games have younger siblings that either play the same games themselves or watch the games being played? Now lets add on college students, how many of them play video games? How many of grown adults? Its really a sobering question, especially when considering how accessible the video games are. Video games are no longer on accessible on tv through a gaming system. There are now video game channels on satellite tv, many cell phones come with video games either downloaded on them or with internet access and the ability to download the games, and finally there are computers, every computer has video games of some sort on it with the ability to download others.
So does the violence in video games encourage the violence in real life? The Journal of Experimental Social Physchology says that violence in video games causes desensitization to violence in our society. However, it does not explicity say that it directly causes violence.
To answer the question of video game violence, we must search within our lives as they happen. I believe that without proper parental care or use of common sense when playing these games that children can become more prone to violence, therefore contributing to violence in real life. It is the same with violent tv shows, most parents wouldn't let their children watch an "R" rated movie until they are mature enough to understand that it is not real. Parents have also begun to block commercial wrestling channels and other shows of that nature because they are finding that their children think that they are real.
With all the violence children see and hear today, whether it be in movies, music ( seriously some of the lyrics are horrible), tv shows or video games, without proper parental control and monitoring, it is not all that far fethched to believe that children are becoming more prone to violence at a younger age then ever before. We must be vigilant to make sure that what our children see and hear is realistic and truthful and that they understand that the violence in video games should not be extended into real life.
