There are a few things you can do to make researching an article a little bit easier. You will want to have a broad topic that you can narrow down into specific categories. In this way, you can focus on details without having them get lost in the body of your work. Research must be flexible, and you should be open to new discoveries all the time. If you already know the answers you seek, there really is no need to do research. It might be better to write a professional account about the topic instead. But if you need to do research, you should be open to the possibility of acquiring any result in the process.
*Keys to Doing Research
^Plan to discover an outcome, rather than deciding on one before you begin your paper. Research involves learning new information to draw valid conclusions. What you thought you knew often becomes obsolete in your quest for information and answers. Think of yourself like a detective, and gather all the facts, even contradicting ones, to make an educated statement about your topic. Present both sides of the issue, allowing the research to speak for itself.
^Gather information from different types of resources. Books, magazines, and newspapers are very useful when doing research. Authors provide refined information, but they are human too. Even when writers are trying to remain unbiased, they might lean toward their own conclusion in their writing. That's why it's important to rely on other sources too. Watch videos to get a personal feeling for the atmosphere surrounding your topic. Tune into lectures, often posted on Youtube and other internet sites, and listen to the inflections of the speaker's voice. Get a feel for his audience too. Make observations. Visit places for hands on research. Talk to people through face to face interviews, the phone, and networking sites.
^Avoid drawing any conclusions about your topic until you have fully immersed yourself in it. While you may well have a hypothesis for your paper, the purpose of research is to prove or disprove that hypothesis, not to agree with your presumptions. One sided research is misleading and faulty. It often creates animosity from peers who know the work isn't up to par. As a writer, your job is to enlighten people with new and interesting knowledge, not tell them what to think about things. Give your audience enough credit to make their own conclusions based on your well written article.
