Decorating a Christmas tree is so much fun for everyone. Even those who do not possess an ounce of artistic talent can succeed in creating a Christmas tree that is a work of art.

Deciding on a theme for your Christmas tree is the greatest challenge, for each year the decorations available for purchase become more intricate and clever.

Some tree decorators like to express their individuality by making their own ornaments, or using collections of favorite things to decorate the tree.

There is no hard, fast rule about what constitutes the ideal Christmas tree. Choosing a theme is a good way to begin, if you are decorating your first tree, or seeking a new look for your old tree.

Top Christmas tree theme ideas:

* Sports theme

With the current fascination with everything related to sports, creating a sport-related tree is a worthy endeavor. If you have a favorite team, using their colors will enhance the theme. You can purchase miniature sports equipment of all types. Hallmark has come out with a series of figures representing NBA and NFA players.

A fishing enthusiast might opt to fill his tree with all items related to fishing. A golfer, skier, or tennis enthusiast, might do the same. Whatever sport you favor, adding a few miniature trophies, medals and blue ribbons will spice up your sport-themed tree.

* Romantic theme

Hearts and flowers, cupids, and pastel colored ornaments will give your tree a romantic flair. Clear glass ornaments reflecting the lights also creates a dreamy, romantic effect.

Lacy angels, snowflakes and pure white, shiny ornaments will state romance loud and clear.

Another way to exude romance is to opt for bright jeweled tones of purple, silver or gold and create a monochromatic tree. String fake pearls in lieu of traditional beads and place huge fake diamond rings in pivotal places for a whimsical visual.

* Country theme

Plaid bows, wood ornaments, birdhouses, gingham or patchwork accessories, all exude a country Christmas. Get real with strung popcorn or cranberries. White paper cutouts of snowflakes, angels and geometric patterns will conjure up the good old days, when ornaments were homemade.

Another country look is to combine red and white checked ribbon with gingerbread men and ginger cookies cut into bells and stars. A striped candy cane on the tip of each branch will round out your cozy country tree.

* Fantasy tree

There are so many variations of trees to be created using Disney characters. You can make a princess tree featuring all the Disney princesses, or a Mickey Mouse tree, complete with Goofy, Donald Duck and the rest of the Disney gang.

Fairy tales make an excellent theme for a Christmas tree. Winnie the Pooh, The Wizard of Oz or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are all exquisite and realistic Hallmark figurine ornaments that can be the focal point of a color-coordinated tree.

Some popular movies, such as Star Wars and Star Trek have produced wonderful ornaments for their fans to create a futuristic, outer-space tree.

* Hobbies or Collections tree

For the inveterate shoe lover, creating a tree of tiny shoes and purse ornaments is trendy and fun.

A cook might enjoy decorating his/her tree with miniature kitchen tools and utensils, such as, little crafted teapots, rolling pins, cookie cutters, or anything that replicates what the cook might use in the kitchen.

Teddy bear collectors, butterfly enthusiasts, angel lovers, all might want to use their cherished items to give the tree a personal touch.

With such a plethora of choices, you might want to have more than one tree adorning the rooms in your home.

Over the years I have had a teddy bear tree in the dining room, a snowman, snowflake tree in the den and the traditional, old fashioned, potpourri of mixed colors and ornaments in the living room. Our family also dabbled with a tree of edibles for the wildlife and birds outside in the yard one year.

You are only limited by your imagination when choosing a theme for your Christmas tree.

With a fanciful imagination and a dose of whimsy, you can create a Christmas tree that will be a conversation piece during the holiday and a cherished memory in years to come.
