Benefits of budgeting your money

A budget is a financial management tool that ensures your personal finances are organized. People often shy away from budgeting because they associate it with some sort of punishment or sacrifice, but actually budgeting simply puts all your income flows and expenditure in one place so you can easily identify deficiencies or excesses.

There are several distinct benefits to budgeting your money.

Budgeting Helps Keep You in Control

Drawing up a budget puts control over your finances into your hands. Because a budget sets out all the income and also lists your expenses you get to decide how much should be allocated to a particular expense. Without a budget, money may be spent haphazardly and before you know it the month's paycheck may be used up. Using a budget makes spending a conscious activity and in so doing puts a limit on how much can be spent at one time.

Budgeting Can Find Extra Money

Because budgeting sets expenses against income for a given period it helps to highlight those expense categories that can be eliminated. It can even boost savings because it is easier to see where money is going and so stem the flow of money spent on frivolous items.

Helps to Accomplish Goals

Using a budget is a great way to accomplish goals. Budgeting involves allocating funds to certain areas while also providing a means to track progress and can act as a motivator. When goals are worked into a personal budget they have a greater chance of success because the budget specifies how much money should be spent on a particular area.

Ensures You Don't Have to Miss Out on Opportunities

Budgeting provides a means of knowing exactly how much money is available at any one time but it also helps to increase reserves of savings. The more money you have available in savings the more flexibility you have because it means you can take advantage of opportunities as they arise. If you have a healthy savings balance you have the freedom to jump in on a great deal without jeopardizing your other commitments. Budgeting makes this possible as it helps make saving easier. Increased savings is a natural by-product of budgeting because the process forces you to look at where money is being spent and allocate amounts to different categories.

Personal budgeting creates a plan for the allocation of household finances. It is a powerful tool and one that should be used to exploit its many benefits.
