The thunderous roar of constant traffic, the buzzes, bleeps, and tones of the phones going off everywhere, and the non-stop random noises that drive us all to insanity are everywhere. Have you ever had the thought, "I wish I had a moment of peace and quiet?"
If this is you, you are not alone. Many people are so stressed with the noises and pressures of everyday life that we are losing a sense of ourselves, who we are, and what really keeps our minds focused and grounded. Beginning meditation practices seems like a "hokey" thing to do, but it can be life transforming. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your meditation sessions.
MEDITATION TIPS
1. Make a commitment to yourself. This commitment is to consciously make at least a 5 minute window for your "meditation" time in your schedule. If you have time for more, great! If not, then you have at the very least made 5 minutes to ground yourself every day. This time does not have to be the same time every day. If you are anything like millions of other people in the world, then your schedule does not always allow for a perfect scheduling of such a time. It gets moved around and you feel that you have failed because you have not "kept to the schedule." So, before you let this first failure to get the best of you, decide right now that this time can be anytime of the day or evening as long as you do it between the time you wake up in the morning and the time you lay your head on the pillow to go to sleep.
2. Allow yourself to succeed. What does this mean? This means, do not start thinking about the kids in the next room making spaghetti with their father, or how many bills you have to pay when you are finished. It means you need to make this time count by going to a place in your house where you can have at least 5 minutes of quiet time. If this means you have to shut yourself in the bathroom and put a sign on the door that says: "Meditation in progress: Go find your own keys, socks, and curling iron" then, by all means do so. Get creative. Meditation is necessary to keep stress at a minimum and your peace of mind at a maximum.
3. Answer this question for yourself: "What do I want to get out of meditation?" The purpose of meditation is to take time out of your day to reflect, clear your mind of the worries of the day, and think... think about the things that are important to you. If your answer to the question is to set new goals and reflect on the goals you have reached, then do not "sugar coat" whatever
