Oftentimes, people forget to clean their ceiling fans. Fortunately, there are no special tools or instructions required. Cleaning ceiling fans is like taking apart the whole unit and putting it back together again. And when you are done cleaning the fan, you will also ensure that the air in the room will be clean, too.
First, you will need to gather your cleaning implements. You will need a rag or clean cloth, a bucket filled with soap mixed with water, and another clean cloth that "attracts" the dust (microfiber works best, here).
Now, you will need to take the ceiling fan apart. It is easier to clean the fan this way because you will have access to the parts without having to use a ladder and reaching where you can't see well. You may think that it is more difficult and time consuming to take the fan apart and then put it together again, but you will make sure that you have cleaned the fan thoroughly, which is important here.
Once you have taken the fan apart, separate the electrical parts from the non-electrical parts. The fan blades will be your top priority. Dip one of your cloths into the soapy water and wipe away each fan blade. Use the dry, clean cloth to complete the cleaning process. Repeat this process for both sides of the fan blades and for all of the blades. Now, wring out the wet cloth and make sure it is only damp, not soaking wet. Carefully wipe clean all of the other non-electrical parts. Use the clean cloth to wipe down the electrical parts. Allow all of the parts to air dry. If you cannot wait that long, place a box fan in front of the parts. You may also want to leave the parts to dry for at least one day.
When you are ready to put the fan together, make sure that you use the clean cloth to wipe down the blades and other parts again. This will ensure that the parts are completely dry.
You can also clean ceiling fans using tools specifically made for this process. A feather duster will make this process easy, because you don't have to take the fan apart, but a feather duster does not necessarily "attract" the dust. Rather, it spreads it. If you prefer, you can use the microfiber cloth just by itself. Use a stepladder that allows your eyes to be directly over the fan's blades. Using a microfiber cloth this way is useful because you don't have to take the fan apart, saving you time.
