Magic the Gathering card analysis: Mad Auntie

"Mad Auntie" is a 2/2 black goblin shaman printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the cards printed in the Lorwyn block that encourages players to build around a theme of creatures. In respects to Mad Auntie, players are encouraged to build around the theme of goblins. In a goblin themed deck, you should be able to get plenty out of Mad Auntie.

The converted mana cost for Mad Auntie is three. You will need one black mana and two colorless mana to bring Mad Auntie from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Mad Auntie can do, the converted cost is well worth it. This is one of the cards that help out creatures that share the same type. Mad Auntie helps out other goblin creatures.

What does Mad Auntie do in the first place?

The first ability of Mad Auntie gives your other goblins +1/+1. This is very much of a good thing if you have a bunch of goblins on the battlefield. If you have means to generate goblin tokens, they would become 2/2 instead of 1/1. This is a good ability if you have the means to generate a bunch of goblin tokens. With about six goblin tokens that are 2/2, you can swing up to twelve points of damage. In a black and red deck, you can combine this with "Rage Reflection" and give those goblin tokens Double Strike.

Those 2/2 goblin tokens would deal up to four points of damage a piece. In this respect, Mad Auntie becomes pretty useful for the most part. However, this is neither the only nor main ability of Mad Auntie.

The main ability allows you to tap Mad Auntie to regenerate another target goblin. In a sense, there is a good combination with Mad Auntie with "Marsh Flitter" and "Weirding Shaman." Make sure that Mad Auntie is still alive by the time you are able to use it. By tapping Mad Auntie, you can regenerate another target goblin. This is pretty useful for the most part because you could regenerate some goblins that are vital to you winning the game.

In regards to Marsh Flitter, you sacrifice a goblin to make it into a 3/3 creature until the end of the turn. You tap the Mad Auntie to regenerate that goblin. The same thing goes for Weirding Shaman. In a sense, you still have your goblins for the most part. However, you can use Mad Auntie to regenerate Weirding Shaman should it get sent to the graveyard. It would not hurt to have another Mad Auntie on the battlefield to help one another out.

Overall, Mad Auntie is a formidable card provided you are able to bring it out onto the battlefield early enough. Make sure you have a deck full of goblins in the process.
