Kansas is a large, square state with a corner torn off by the Missouri River. It is bordered to the north by Nebraska, the West by Colorado, the East by Missouri and on the south by Oklahoma. Most people think the capital is Wichita, but they are wrong, it is Topeka! The most famous person from Kansas was Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and her dog Toto!. This state could use a bulletin board to make it more memorable.
To start your bulletin board on Kansas, go to the Enchanted Learning Website and copy out the printable map, it is free! This map can be easily enlarged and used as the base for the bulletin board. But if it is a base, it needs more to be added.
Roads and cities? In Kansas there are few! It is mostly flat and agricultural. There are a few interstate highways, Topeka is the capitol, and Wichita is the largest city. Many think it is Kansas City, but most of Kansas City is actually in the neighboring state of Missouri. Since Kansas is the "Sunflower State", have the class draw sunflowers and put them on your map where each large city is located, you will only need fourteen!
Now it is time to get the class involved with this bulletin board on Kansas. assign each student something to look up about Kansas. as you can learn from the Enchanted Learning Website, you don't need a large class as Kansas has few state symbols, there appear to only be eight! There is the state bird (Western Meadowlark), state animal (Buffalo), state insect (Honeybee), state reptile (Ornate box turtle), state amphibian (barred tiger salamander) state flower (sunflower) and state tree (cottonwood), plus then the state soil! Some one can also draw the state flag. According to the Netscape Chronicle Website you can also add a state seal, two state marches and a state song!
Kansas does have fossils and remains of prehistoric creatures, but none have been declared symbols of the state ate this time. It also has very few mountains, no major rivers and is mainly range land (thus the state song is "Home on the Range" by Dr. Brewster Higley).
Kansas, a large square state that makes a large square bulletin board that needs to be known, have the class fill it in, maybe they can find here the great Land of Oz!
