Easter is the second most important holiday in the Christian calendar, and one of the most important around the world. But it is also a time of change. Spring is starting, the flowers are blooming and animals are shedding their hair. Why is this important? Because allergies will be flaring and there will be rain, so students can't get outdoors as much, so time to try some Easter Crafts.
When most people think of Easter, they think of eggs and the Easter Bunny. Eggs can be an excellent craft item, and not not for dyeing. The can be hollowed out (Small holes drilled out at each end and then blown) and then carefully opened. Use the inside to create little dioramas for Easter, the child's own Faberge Egg. The teacher should only show the technique and supply eggs, paint and glitter, then let the students use their imagination!
One craft that is fun and exciting at Easter time is building kites! Kite flying is popular around the world and a hand-made kite is always special. The traditional kite is fun and could even be used to symbolize the cross at Easter. It can be painted with many unique patterns, though challenge the class to decorate them so they can be visible from below with the sun shining through.
Then there are various types of Box or three dimensional Kites. They can even try to make them in the shape of their favorite creature: dragons, birds, butterflies or even Pokemon. They can be a challenge coordinating shape and balance as well as color and become a flying piece or sculpture. By using light sticks, glue and paper these all become a cheap craft idea as well.
The nice thing about kites is that when they are finished and you have a beautiful spring day, take them out to a field and fly them! It can be a contest that will prove entertaining as well as educational. Of course many kites may not fly and all will crash at some point, but that is part of the fun and excitement, plus the class will learn as much by what doesn't work as by what does!
The is what all crafts really should be about, fun, excitement and education! Learning to mix balance and beauty with what works and what doesn't. This is important to everybody. Easter Crafts are a wonderful time to explore the possibilities.
